果冻影院鈥檚 Dr Benjamin Guedj honoured by French Government

Dr Benjamin Guedj (果冻影院 Department of Computer Science) has been named a Knight of the Order of the Academic Palms by France for his contributions to artificial intelligence (AI) and Franco-British scientific collaboration.

The French government bestowed the prestigious honour (Chevalier de l鈥橭rdre des Palmes Acad茅miques) in recognition of Dr Guedj鈥檚 significant scientific achievements and his instrumental role in fostering Franco-British academic and scientific cooperation.

Dr Guedj, an Associate who will be promoted to Professor of Machine Learning and Principal Researcher in Foundational Artificial Intelligence on 1 October 2024, is a research scientist at Inria, France鈥檚 top research institute in mathematics and computer science, and a Turing Fellow with The Alan Turing Institute.聽

Since 2020, he has served as the founder and scientific director of The Inria London Programme, a joint lab that bridges research, innovation and global engagement efforts between France and the UK.

Speaking about the award, Dr Guedj said: 鈥淩eceiving the Academic Palms is not only a personal honour but also a profound acknowledgement of our collaborative efforts at the 果冻影院-Inria partnership. It reaffirms our commitment to advancing global science through impactful international partnerships.鈥

果冻影院's President & Provost Dr Michael Spence signed a Letter of Intent between 果冻影院 and Inria in March this year, during a visit to 果冻影院 by聽Sylvie Retailleau, French Minister of Higher Education & Research and Her Excellency H茅l猫ne Tr茅heux-Duch锚ne, French Ambassador to the UK.聽The agreement established a roadmap to launch the Joint Centre on Artificial Intelligence.

The planned 果冻影院-Inria centre, set to launch later this year, will significantly advance research collaborations in computer science, with a core focus on AI. It will signal a pivotal step in supporting Franco-British cooperation on science, innovation and global engagement.

Dr Spence said: 鈥淚 was delighted to hear of the Chevalier de l鈥橭rdre des Palmes Acad茅miques bestowed by the French Government. What terrific news, and a fitting testament to both Dr Guedj鈥檚 machine learning research and his success at fostering academic collaboration between France and the UK.鈥
