Department for Global Health Equality and Social Justice

The Department for Global Health Equality and Social Justice encompasses two Centres at IGH.

Our department includes the Centre for Gender, Health and Social Justice and the Centre for the Health of Women, Children, and Adolescents.

Our research aims to improve the health of women, children and young people in resource-constrained settings, reduce violence against women and people who identify as LGBTQIA+, and strengthen the wellbeing of Indigenous peoples, migrants, and other minoritised communities globally. We do this through inclusive research, engagement and interventions with communities, care providers, and policymakers. Our research builds on a social justice-oriented approach that seeks greater equity in the delivery and distribution of healthcare as well as action on the social and structural determinants of health.Ìý

We draw on diverse fields and methods. These include social epidemiology, social anthropology, gender and feminisms, paediatrics, public health, community psychology, political science, implementation science, and mathematical modelling. Our research is informed by community engagement through strength-based approaches, including through decolonising, participatory, and arts-based methods.

Members work in partnership with academic institutions, policymakers, and NGOs in Argentina, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Japan, Kenya, Malawi, Mexico, Nigeria, Nepal, Peru, Philippines, Samoa, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Uganda, UK, and the US.
