Career choices for ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Geographers

10 September 2020

Alumni return to pass on their advice

Career Choices

While some geographers go into banking and law, a ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Geography Careers Event on 26 February ranged much more widely than the usual graduate schemes.

An expert panel of ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Geography alumni returned to talk to a large gathering of current students about career choices. The session was chaired by Andy Walsh (¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Careers Service) and the line-up of speakers included Eleanor Fryer, Rebecca Johnson, Jasbir Basi, Miriam Lugg and Sam Halvorsen. They represented those working in the environmental sector, government mapping services, the charities sector, academia and business advisory work.

Each reflected on the skills they had learnt as ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº geography students, and their relevance and importance in their current roles. They also emphasised the value of undertaking internships and volunteering, although without losing sight of the enjoyment of learning and studying university geography.

After fielding a range of questions from the audience, more informal discussions continued over a drink afterwards Feedback after the event was very positive, especially from those still uncertain of their future career path.
