Thirteen years after it was established, the European Institute has grown intoÌý¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's hub for research, education and engagement on Europe. We are proud to advise ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº senior leadership on all things European;Ìýto deliver innovative practice-led teaching on Europe and the EU to undergraduate and postgraduate students;Ìýto foster a cross-disciplinaryÌýresearch environment where work on Europe can flourish; and to enhance the reach of ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº ideas and expertise, through policy, public and student engagement.

Highlights from last year included helping to showcase cutting-edge research at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº by hostingÌýa UK-France Joint Diplomatic Training session for the FCDO; delivering aÌýseries of student masterclasses which brought 37 practitioners to ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº to enrich teaching on Europe; co-editing a book on the Architecture of Politics in Europe; and co-leading a Commission on Policy Engagement by Area Experts at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº.

As we have navigated war in Europe, Horizon accession and the many effects of Brexit, the Institute has played a vital role in cultivating relationships, initiating new collaborations and convening discussions at the highest levels.

With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Europe is facing a brutal war on its doorstep and crises relating to refugees, energy costs, security concerns and more. Unity, dialogue, knowledge, and effective policy are
more important than ever. The ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº European Institute drives conversations around these topics inside and well beyond the university, reminding us of Europe’s role, its responsibilities, and the huge potential for change that comes in the process of tackling unprecedented challenges. For me, the space it provides to hear from colleagues and guests across a diverse range of disciplines and backgrounds has alwaysÌýbeen enlightening; today it is indispensable.
