29 June 2020

Richard Blundell is the 2020 recipient of the Jacob Mincer Award for lifetime contributions to the field of labour economics

Richard Blundell
The Society of Labor Economics said, "from his earliestÌýpublished papers Richard Blundell’s work has been focused on using economic theory andÌýeconometric methods to model and understand individual choices, and help informÌýpolicyÌýmaking on issues such as taxation, pensions, training programs, andÌýinnovation policy.ÌýÌýHis workÌýhas provided an integrated treatment of consumptionÌýandÌýemployment decisions to estimate labor supply elasticities, to analyze theÌýeffects of tax reforms, and to help explain the divergence between income andÌýconsumption inequality.ÌýÌý

Richard has alsoÌýmade many fundamental contributions to econometric methodology, including theÌýdevelopment of new methods to address endogeneity in censored and limitedÌýdependent variable settings, and for estimating dynamic panel data models.ÌýIn a series of innovative papers spanning over 40 years, Richard hasÌýinvestigated the joint behavior of consumption and labor supply, and emphasizedÌýto the profession the insights that can onlyÌýbe gained by examining the twoÌýtogether. Ìý

Throughout his career Richard has also focused on the importantÌýrole that careful economic modeling, combined with cutting edge econometricÌýmethods, can play in the analysis of labor marketÌýpolicies such as training andÌýwelfare to work programs.Ìý

In light of Richard’s long series of important contributions toÌýthe theory and practice of applied economics, his generous support andÌýmentoring of young economists, his key roles in theÌýprofession and on numerousÌýadvisory boards and commissions, he is an outstanding and trulyÌýworthy recipient of the Jacob Mincer Award."
