In the Margins of Early Modern Science: Finding Women in the Sloane Lab Knowledge Base

Tucked away in the margins of Sloane’s catalogues lie the untold stories of many individuals whose contributions to science have largely remained in the shadows. Dr Rosalind White’s project, In the Margins of Early Modern Science: Pioneering Women in Sloane’s ‘Paper Museum’, will highlight the under-recognised contributions of female artists within these collections. 

Sloane’s catalogues contain scattered references to women, but their stories are often obscured by gaps in documentation. This presentation delves into the first stage of Dr. White’s project, which uncovers these hidden narratives through a preliminary data set and an accompanying guide designed to facilitate the discovery of women's contributions within the Sloane Lab Knowledge Base. 

The guide aims to provide researchers and the public with tools to locate and engage with the narratives of women within Sloane’s collections. By doing so, it not only illuminates the diverse contributions of early modern women but also enriches our understanding of the social and cultural contexts that shaped Sloane’s collection. This project strives to ensure that these pioneering women receive the recognition they deserve in the annals of science and art history. 

Bringing Sloane into Conversation with Blackness: Rest, Resistance and Refusal
With Hannah Cusworth

What does it mean to view Hans Sloane through a Black Studies lens? During her community fellowship, Hannah Cusworth was guided by Black Studies thinkers at critical junctures. Their work transformed how she conceived of the project, the research she undertook and how she tried to live during those three months. During this presentation, Hannah will share her process, experience and tentative conclusions.
