Our Public Engagement Unit is delighted to announce the awardees in the latest round of Beacon Bursaries. After another very competitive round, the unit is proud to have funded 13 projects at the end of 2016/17.

Activities we have supported in this round include promoting access to health information and services in the Chinese community in the UK, addressing sewage management on canal boats, creating a photo exhibition on parental leave for fathers, and a host of other projects that will connect with a variety of public groups.

Previous Beacon Bursary winners have run workshops听in remote communities around the world. Energy mapping and photography skills were shared with off-grid solar home users in Rwanda听to assess the technology and its impact in the communities. In Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, mapping skills were used to gather data on urban water access. The data collected听increased the negotiating power of local residents when appealing to their governments for service improvements. These skills mobilised individuals who might previously have felt powerless, and effected real change in the community.

We鈥檙e really excited to see how this听year鈥檚 projects develop with the support of the Beacon Bursaries, and will invite project leaders to update on their progress throughout the year.

Beacon Bursaries are available to 果冻影院 staff and postgraduate research students looking to connect their research or teaching with people outside 果冻影院 in a new way. The next deadline for the fund is in June 2018, and the round will be open in January 2018. Sign up to our newsletter for further announcements and information.

The Museum鈥檚 updated displays will tell a story of biodiversity loss, engaging visitors in the human impact on the planet鈥檚 diversity of life and how 果冻影院 research is responding to the planetary crisis.果冻影院鈥檚 Grant Museum of Zoology will close its doors to visitors at 5pm Saturday 11 March 2023 in order to undergo a 拢300,000 programme of improvements and enhancements during spring and summer 2023, reopening in autumn 2023.External funding for the improvement work was awarded jointly by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) and the Wolfson Museums and Galleries Improvement Foundation, and was announced at the Museum in December 2022.Established in 1827 as a teaching collection in comparative anatomy, the Grant Museum of Zoology is now home to around 68,000 zoological specimens, ranging from extant and extinct animal skeletons, fluid preserved specimens, taxidermy, glass and wax animal models, fossils and pinned entomology. The Museum is visited by around 40,000 people each year. The changes will maintain the Museum鈥檚 beautifully unique floor-to-ceiling displays and atmospheric charm. The theatrical space will have new interpretation to highlight the astonishing diversity of life in the natural world and explore how the collections can inspire and challenge us to rebalance our relationship with nature.The Grant Museum of Zoology will continue to host its renowned creative collaborations, between performers, artists, researchers and local communities, with a new emphasis on activism on the planetary crisis.Tannis Davidson, Head of Zoology and Science Collections at 果冻影院, said:鈥淭he new displays will ensure that the Grant Museum continues to be a vital resource to learn about (and learn from) the animal kingdom by providing better care for our irreplaceable collections and highlighting how they play a role in biodiversity and conservation research鈥�.Kat Nilsson, Director of Museums and Cultural Programmes at 果冻影院, said:鈥淲e are grateful to DCMS Wolfson for funding this redevelopment.
