Kam Poon - MSci Chemistry

The most surprising thing I discovered is how much the staff care about students, they work so hard to address any issues we have and are always looking for ways they can improve the course!

Why did you choose your degree?

I always loved science from a young age and when I was studying for my A level I soon realised that I wanted to study a subject which provides you with an understanding of the world around us but at the same time is very practical and can solve real world problems.

Why did you apply to study at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº?

¹û¶³Ó°Ôº is one of the most well-respected universities in the world and the chemistry department is historically prestigious while continuing to carry out cutting edge research. London was also a hugely important factor for me, it is one of the most diverse, vibrant and exciting cities in the world and I love living here.Ìý

What is the best thing about your course?

So hard to pick just one! Maybe the most surprising thing I have discovered while at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº is how much the staff in the chemistry department care about students, they work so hard to address any issues we have and are always looking for ways they can improve the course!Ìý

What do you find interesting about your field of study and what inspires you?

Chemistry is on the frontier of where theory meets practicality. The concept of manipulating atoms to solve global problems (Climate change, renewable energy, drug development) still blows my mind.Ìý

Do you think studying at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Chemistry is a good investment?

Yes. The 3 and a bit year I have spent at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº have been the best of my life. I will always be so sad when my time here comes to an end and will always appreciate what studying chemistry at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº has done for me.

What is it like studying in London and how do you think it has benefited your studies?

The diversity. London is a melting pot of people from every corner of the planet and being surrounded by so many people from a range of cultures and backgrounds has taught me more than I could have ever imagined. Allowing me to now see problems, academic and otherwise, in a new light. It also means there is never a shortage of amazing food in the city.

What are your career plans once you’ve completed your current programme of study at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº?Ìý

I now love chemistry more than I ever did and hope to continue my studies by doing a PhD.Ìý

Is there anything else you would like to say about your time at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Chemistry?

The friends I have made and the memories I have created at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº have meant I’ve loved every minute of my time here. I will always treasure this time of my life.
