What is Ecosia and does it work?听
A non-profit CO2-neutral search engine.
Ecosia is a social business and CO2 -neutral search engine that uses ad-generated revenue to fund planting trees. Each search with Ecosia removes roughly 1 kg of CO2 from the air. To achieve its objectives Ecosia cooperates with non-profit organizations (NGOs) across the world and uses 100% renewable energy thanks to having built their own solar plants so they can supply enough clean energy to power the searches.
How is it different from other search engines?听
Ecosia distinguishes itself from the main search engines in the market, trying to make a positive environmental contribution to society (Yunus, 2008).听
Ecosia importantly doesn鈥檛 use any third-party tracking tools, meaning that any search made on the service won鈥檛 be seen by any party other than Ecosia. Furthermore, any search made on Ecosia becomes anonymized after one week. In contrast, Google and Bing will hold onto bits of search data (such as the device or date), even after deleting browser history and cookies.
Clicks revenue to plant trees across the world
Clicking on ads generates revenue for Ecosia, which is paid by the advertiser. Ecosia then uses at least 80% of its monthly profits to plant trees where they are needed most. Here鈥檚 the math: an average search generates around 0.005 鈧� of revenue. It costs roughly 0.25 鈧� to plant a tree, which means that Ecosia can plant one tree every 50 searches. On average, these trees will each remove 50 kg of CO2 during an expected 15-year lifetime.听

The 果冻影院 sustainability strategy is targeting carbon neutral activity across the university. By using Ecosia at the department level, we will have figures to showcase the number of trees we can plant when everybody in the department uses Ecosia as search engine.听

How can I set up Ecosia and plant trees?听

- Anyone that downloads Ecosia through this link will start to add to the 果冻影院 tree counter. If you already use Ecosia you first need to uninstall the extension from your browser and clear your internet cookies. You then need to re-install Ecosia using your university's link. Is anywhere else in 果冻影院 doing this?
There was a student lead campaign back in January 2019 and Ecosia is still used elsewhere in 果冻影院. On average, 22 trees are already planted each month as a result.
