Funding

Map

There are a lot of things to think about when considering your finances for an overseas internship. To help you think about the things you will need to pay for, there is a dedicated Finance area within our Prepare to go section. It will be your responsibility to ensure that you are satisfied that the internship is financially viable for you as a student and your own situation. There are various ways to secure funding through the help of family or university. Click on the sections below to find out more about these, including details and eligibility criteria for the two funding options currently available for students at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº undertaking an international internship.

Turing Grant 2024

To support students undertaking a summer internship or research placement with a duration of at least 28 days at an organisation outside of the UK, ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Careers and the Study Abroad team are offering funding within the framework of the Turing scheme.

The Turing Scheme is the UK Government's global programme for studying, working, and living abroad, offering once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for personal and professional development for students. Within ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº, the Turing Grant for summer internships and research placement and funding is co-managed by ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Study Abroad and ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Careers.

Applications open on Wednesday 13 December 2023. To apply, students need to complete the application form on my¹û¶³Ó°ÔºCareers. Full details about the Turing Grant, including eligibility requirements, terms and conditions, and the application process, are in the Turing Grant Information Pack 2024, which you must read before applying.

You must apply at least 3 months before the start month of your mobility. Your deadline to apply therefore depends on the month of your internship start date:

  • May start date: apply by 1 February 2024
  • June start date: apply by 1 March 2024
  • July start date: apply by 1 April 2024
  • August start date: apply by 12 May 2024

Before submitting your application, we would also recommend reading through our and you can also then have your application reviewed before submitting it by booking an Applications Advice appointment.

For general information about the Turing Scheme at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº, please visit ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Study Abroad website on Turing Scheme.

Self-funding

If you are not eligible for funding, it is essential that you consider in advance how else you will be able to fund your internship abroad and ensure you allow enough time to execute your plans!

Family funding and crowdfunding, or a mixture of both, are other possible ways, alongside working part-time to earn some extra cash.

To get an idea of the cost involved in doing an internship abroad, please see the Finance section of our Prepare to go page.
