果冻影院 Team Introduces Virtual Human Visitor to Lords and MPs

8 August 2019

On Wednesday 26th June 2019, a team from 果冻影院 led by Andrea Townsend-Nicholson, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at 果冻影院, took a virtual Human Avatar to the Houses of Parliament to meet a cross party group of MPs, and Lords.

The purpose of this visit was to explain to Parliamentarians how the virtual human uses digital evidence at multiple scales 鈥 from the 鈥榣etters鈥 in genetic code to medical imaging of the heart 鈥 to seek real improvements to healthcare by delivering truly personalised medicine.

Setting up a Virtual Human Evidence Pod, the virtual digital 鈥楳acarena-dancing鈥 skeleton drew attention as the team demonstrated to MPs and Lords how the most fundamental aspects of living processes and cells including tissues and organs are being reproduced by scientists using supercomputers.

Attendees, who included Lord Cameron of Dillington, Countess Mar, Thangam Debbonaire MP, Lilian Greenwood MP, Jim Sturdy MP, Chris Leslie MP, Neil Parish MP, Tony Lloyd MP and Norman Lamb MP 鈥 were shown a beating virtual heart in the Evidence Pod as part of EVIDENCE WEEK, which aims to help politicians make sense of an increasing range of issues amid an explosion of scientific research and data. The team used a special tablet loaned by Dassault Syst猫mes to show a 3D version of the virtual heart in action.

鈥淭he Virtual Human will enable personalised drugs to be designed and can also be used to predict the safety of medicines using digital evidence instead of animal experiments,鈥 said Prof Townsend-Nicholson.

Evidence Week听is an initiative of Sense about Science, the independent charity that promotes the public interest in sound science and evidence, in collaboration with the House of Commons Library, POST (the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology) and the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee.

鈥淥ur goal is that one day a doctor will be able to study the way diet and treatments work on your digital avatar before they try them out on you, in order to choose the best possible solution for you, specifically. 听The power of the supercomputers needed for this does not presently exist within the UK, making international collaboration the only way in which to stay at the leading edge of this technology.鈥 Professor Andrea Townsend-Nicholson concluded.
