UKVN Vaccine Hubs win IChemE Global Award

A joint entry from the UKVN Future Vaccine Manufacturing Research Hubs (Vax-Hub and the FVMR Hub) has won a global award from the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE).

At the recent IChemE Global Awards 2021, the joint entry from the UKVN Future Vaccine Manufacturing Hubs at Imperial College London (), ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº and the University of Oxford (Vax-Hub) won the Team Award.

The IChemE Global Awards celebrate chemical, process and biochemical engineering excellence and are widely considered as the world’s most prestigious chemical engineering awards.Ìý

The ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº-Oxford Vax-Hub, based within the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Department of Biochemical Engineering, is a research programme funded by a grant from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) with the aim of ensuring uninterrupted and affordable vaccine supply for low and middle-income countries while addressing a rapid response to epidemic threats. ÌýThe Hub’s vision is to make the UK the global centre for integrated discovery through to bioprocess manufacture of next-generation vaccines. Ìý The Hub brings together academic institutions (¹û¶³Ó°Ôº, the Jenner Institute at the University of Oxford, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Imperial College London and the University of Leeds) and a diverse range of international industry partners.

Speaking after the award was announced, Professor Martina Micheletti, Co-Director of the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº-Oxford Hub said: “I think this reflects the crucial role engineering has and will have in vaccine manufacturing research alongside the other disciplines and expertise as well as the importance of multidisciplinary cross-institution and international team working in this space."
