Hosted by the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP), this virtual events series will ask the questions: WhatÌý​isÌý‘public purpose’ in the time of a global pandemic? What is the role of the State in shaping a social and economic recovery with a new directionality?ÌýThroughout the series, IIPP will be in conversation withÌýleading global thinkersÌýon today’s most pressing challenges, from the macroeconomic policy response to the effectiveness of different public governance solutions and civic engagement experimentation.

This series will also explore how to give public purpose to powerful digital technologies and rebuild more resilient economic systems and institutions, as well as what is needed across emerging economies to avoid spiralling intoÌýmore debt and inequality.

TheÌýcurrentÌýglobal COVID-19 crisis is aÌýwake-upÌýcall for a new public purposeÌýwhich works for a more inclusive and sustainable global society.

Danny Dorling is one of Britain’s leading geographers and has had a major influence on our understanding of inequality and poverty. His work has revealed the multidimensional aspects to inequality beyond simple income measures, especially those in housing, health, employment and education, and pioneered new cartographic methods for understanding how these play out over space and society.

Georgia Gould was elected a Labour councillor on Camden Council in 2010 at the age of only 24, becoming its leader in 2017. She has coordinated Camden’s response to COVID-19, including setting up an economic renewal taskforce in partnership with the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP).

Carlota Perez studies the socio-economic impact of major technological change. Author of the influential Technological Revolutions and Financial Capital, she is Honorary Professor at IIPP and at SPRU, University of Sussex, a Visiting Professor at LSE and at TalTech, Estonia. Carlota’s current research project analyses the historical role of government in shaping the context for innovation.
