AI is quickly becoming the defining general-purpose technology of the early 21st century. As interest and investment grow, countries and companies need to ground AI鈥檚 promise in the reality of trends in its development, deployment, and diffusion. Where are technical developments coming from? What is the role of the military? Is AI really as 鈥渙pen source鈥 as the field claims? Who is set to gain the most and how are nations thinking about the risks of falling behind?

果冻影院 Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose presents Nathan Benaich and Ian Hogarth on the third edition of their landmark report, the . Showing the realities of AI investment and development, from its technical revolutions to the politicization of AI innovation, the report provides a broad survey to help understand AI鈥檚 future trajectories.听

This talk will be chaired by IIPP Director Mariana Mazzucato in conversation with the report authors, Ian Hogarth听(IIPP) and (Air Street Capital), alongside Tim O鈥橰eilly听(滨滨笔笔)听补苍诲 (Exponential View).

Ian Hogarth
Ian Hogarth is a Visiting Professor of Practice at IIPP, and an entrepreneur and angel investor with a background in machine learning. He co-founded and ran Songkick, the concert service used by 17m people each month. Nathan Benaich

Founder and General Partner at Air Street Capital

Nathan Benaich is the Founder and General Partner of , a venture capital firm investing in early-stage AI-first technology and life science companies. The team鈥檚 investments include Mapillary (acq. Facebook), Graphcore, Thought Machine, Tractable, and LabGenius. Nathan is Managing Trustee of The RAAIS Foundation, a non-profit with a mission to advance education and open-source research in common good AI. Tim O'Reilly is a Visiting Professor of Practice at IIPP. The company delivers online learning, publishes books, and runs online events about cutting-edge technology, and has a history of convening conversations that reshape the computer industry. If you鈥檝e heard the term 鈥渙pen source software鈥, 鈥渨eb 2.0鈥, 鈥渢he Maker movement鈥, 鈥済overnment as a platform鈥, or 鈥渢he WTF economy鈥, he鈥檚 had a hand in framing each of those big ideas. He is a partner at early-stage venture firm O鈥橰eilly AlphaTech Ventures (OATV), and on the boards of Code for America, PeerJ, Civis Analytics, and PopVox.
