The effect of climate change on office building energy consumption in Japan

(¹û¶³Ó°Ôº IEDE Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Built Environments) and Toshihiko Shibuya (Director of C.H.C. System Co. Ltd) have collaborated on a paper recently published in Energy and Buildings. The paper is entitled 'The effect of climate change on office building energy consumption in Japan'. Highlights of the paper include:

  • Substantial reductions of energy consumption are expected if the full measures are implemented.
  • The reduction rates differ in each location and each period due to regional climate characteristics and climate change.
  • A brief economic analysis suggests that these measures could be competitive with nuclear power generation.
  • Office buildings in Japan can reduce energy requirements and CO2 emissions without resorting to nuclear power generation.
