Biopolitics, Security and the Production of Space In Jerusalem and Beyond

The question of security and planning in the聽city has long historical roots. Indeed,聽according to Leonie Sandercock 鈥減lanning聽and urban management discourses are, and聽always have been, saturated with fear鈥 (cited聽in Wekerle and Jackson, 2005: 34). A good聽early example of this is provided in French聽Renaissance scientist Bernard Palissy鈥焥聽1563 聽paper De La Ville Fortresse (Klauser,聽2010). Palissy was a French Huguenot,聽subjected to Catholic persecution and聽violence. As a result he was deeply聽concerned with the design of a city that聽would protect both his life, and that of his聽religious community.
