The 2022 WLA Student Awards聽rewards extraordinary work from design schools around the world in the field of Landscape Architecture. Eligible work must have been completed while attending studies by current students and graduates of the last two years.

Farinoosh was awarded the Award of Excellence in the Concept Design category for her聽Landscape Architecture MLA Year 1 project, which was exhibited at The Bartlett Autumn Show 2021.聽

'Here East Wetland Rehabilitation'

Roads, highways and buildings are main features of modern cities. Along those hard layers of landscape there is leftover terrain with scarce vegetation. Many of these forgotten lands constitute聽terrain vague. These hard layers of our cities have many impacts on our environment. One of the most significant is the rapid increase in the level of runoff as the ground is not able to absorb water. This problem causes a high risk of flood in various parts of the world.

This project suggests a possible way to absorb runoff by designing a wetland out of a聽terrain vague. At Here East, Hackney Wick, London, there is a linear site with poor vegetation near the River Lee Navigation Channel. The proposal suggests the creation of a linear wetland with defined pathways and flexible wooden scaffoldings. These provide endless moments and opportunities for visitors to engage with the site and define its use.

Responding to Farinoosh鈥檚 project, the jurors called it:

鈥�[A] poetic idea with a gorgeous graphic sensibility. Minimal but powerful design interventions that soar with delight.鈥�

Farinoosh is studying Landscape Architecture MLA in Design Studio 2, tutored by Cannon Ivers and Alex Malaescu.
