The central part of the staging structure for the new venue complex is a large performance shell, designed by Soundforms. Soundforms creates acoustic performance enclosures for outdoor venues, and was co-founded by Bartlett lecturer and PhD candidate Paul Bavister, and Jason Flanagan, whose design firm Flanagan Lawrence were architects for the Performance Shell. Paul is also a Project Director at Flanagan Lawrence; he acted as Project Architect on behalf of Flanagan Lawrence and was responsible for interfacing with the client and the other consultants. 

As Project Architect Paul worked with the San Diego Symphony to develop the project brief, ensuring that the form met the aspirations of the orchestra. He led the design team through two design phases, Concept Design, (with UK based consultants) and Developed Design (with US based consultants). 

Working together with Tucker Sadler Architects, the Soundforms design team expanded the design to accommodate a large orchestra with chorus and soloists as a permanent structure on the Embarcadero Marina Park South site. Tucker Sadler Architects is lead designer and architect of record of this state-of-the-art venue.

The Rady Shell made its international debut in August, and Apple recently hosted their recent iPhone 13 launch at the venue.

Paul Bavister is a senior lecturer at The Bartlett, lecturing in Architecture, and is also pursuing his PhD at the school, researching evolutionary optimisation and the generation of emotional response to sound and space.
