Call for Applications - ARC Community Ambassadors

Apply by 4th October to be considered for an ARC Community Ambassador role

Are you a 果冻影院 PhD student, Post Doctoral or Early Career Researcher? 听Do you create and/or use digital approaches, data, software, hardware or tools in your research? Do you create and/or use digital approaches, data, software, hardware or tools in your research?听 Would you like to help your department make better use of 果冻影院鈥檚 support for Digital Research and Scholarship?听

If so, you could become an ARC Community Ambassador!听

The 果冻影院 Centre for Advanced Research Computing (ARC) is 果冻影院's research, innovation and service centre for the tools, practices and systems that enable computational science and digital scholarship. The work we do supports staff and students across 果冻影院 to produce world-leading research.听 We鈥檙e experts in software and hardware selection; professional software development; scripting; high performance computing (HPC); research data management; data science; handling sensitive data and much more.听 We鈥檙e at the forefront of establishing the science of open science, establishing new professions such as research data stewards and research software developers (RSD).听 We also provide infrastructure and novel frameworks for high performance computing and educating colleagues and students across campus in all things related to digitally enabled research and scholarship.听

We鈥檝e recently set up a Community initiative to help forge stronger links between ARC and other departments, to ensure that researchers and academics are aware of ARC and what it can offer, to seed specialist digital research communities and to make sure that ARC can proactively support future trends in digital research and scholarship.听

But we can鈥檛 do this alone, and we鈥檙e now looking to recruit PhD students and Early Career Researchers from across 果冻影院 to help us achieve these goals.听

Your Experience听

To apply for this role, you should be a PhD student, Postdoc or Early Career Researcher, making use of digital approaches in your research, including (but very much not limited to):听

  • High performance computing听

  • Software development (any language)听

  • Artificial intelligence听

  • Image processing听

  • Data analytics听

  • Data stewardship/management听

You鈥檒l also have experience with presenting and communicating information to audiences outside your own discipline and have had some experience with organising events, workshops or other activities for fellow students, colleagues or as part of a research project or conference.听听 Experience with social media content creation would be a bonus.听

The Role听

As the ARC Ambassador within your department, you鈥檒l be the bridge and contact point between your colleagues and ARC and you鈥檒l help us identify opportunities to forge stronger links between ARC and your colleagues.听 The approach you鈥檒l take to this is flexible and can be adjusted to align with your interests and skills as well as how your department works.听 Initial suggestions include:听

  • Organising/offering to give a talk about ARC, e.g. as part of a departmental or group seminar series, within a staff meeting, as a lunch-hour 鈥渓ecture鈥 (in collaboration with an ARC staff member).听听

  • Helping to organise an ARC Roadshows, Festivals or drop-in session where your colleagues can meet members of the ARC team and discuss research challenges, learn about ARC, and get help with issues relating to software or hardware selection, scripting, programming, high performance computing, research data management, handling sensitive data and much more.听

  • Circulating e-mails to students and staff to ensure that everyone is aware of ARC activities, events and training opportunities, e.g. software carpentries, the Cluster Club, community meetings, drop-in advice sessions; encourage colleagues to participate in these activities.听

  • Answer questions from colleagues/staff members in your department about what ARC is and what it offers, introducing them to relevant ARC staff members as needed.听

  • Raising awareness within ARC of relevant activities that your department is organising.听听

  • Informing ARC about common digital challenges in your department where 果冻影院 hasn鈥檛 yet found a solution.听

  • Generating social media content (e.g. live blogging, LinkedIn, X) during ARC events.听

We鈥檒l also ask you to help support ARC activities across 果冻影院, and to work with us to forge links across departments and build 果冻影院-wide communities around software, data, tools, and more.听

Of course, to achieve this you鈥檒l need to be familiar with what ARC is and does. You鈥檒l be part of an existing Community team, and we鈥檒l provide introductory sessions, support, help with developing content/slides, and opportunities to shadow ARC staff to learn more about what we do.听

How you will benefit听

If you鈥檙e a PhD student, we can offer 拢21.00/hour, for around 10 hours work per month (the exact workload will vary across the academic year) for 6 months in the first instance (with the possibility of renewal). For 果冻影院 employees, we鈥檒l be happy to fund the equivalent travel/conference participation to the corresponding amount1.听 We鈥檒l be appointing two Ambassadors as a pilot scheme in the first instance.听

By working as an ARC Community Ambassador, you will benefit from听

  • An opportunity to enhance your CV and demonstrate engagement with researchers beyond your discipline.听听

  • Meeting and working with other students and researchers from across 果冻影院.听

  • Developing community engagement and communication skills.听

  • Forming stronger networks with staff and researchers across your department.听

  • Working with the professionals and researchers who are establishing foundations for open science all across 果冻影院 and learning about career opportunities in new professions including Research Software Engineering and Research Data Stewardship.听

  • Learning about the cutting-edge technologies that are shaping the future of digital research.听

  • Having direct access to world leading Digital Research experts and specialists.听

  • Broadening your understanding of 果冻影院 and 果冻影院's research culture.听

Through your working with ARC your department will also benefit from:听

  • A better understanding of the way that ARC works and the support, education and services that are available to researchers.听

  • Having the department's and disciplines' digital research better understood by ARC, so that support and activities can be matched to researcher needs.听

  • Links to a network of Digital Researchers across 果冻影院.听听

  • Strengthening grant applications - having ARC expert researchers on board provides strong evidence to funders with regards to the development of professional, sustainable open-source software, data curation and more.听

  • The opportunity to work with professional software developers and other digital researchers who fully understand research and the research lifecycle in a way that developers external to academia may not, and can assist with developing high quality, sustainable, software.听听
