You've arrived! Are you ready to study at one of the world's top universities? Here鈥檚 our quick guide to help you settle in halls, stay safe and build your community.听

These quick tips will help you get started. But if there鈥檚 anything you want to know 鈥� and the answer isn鈥檛 in here 鈥� speak to a member of your Hall Team, an Ambassador, or a Student Residence Adviser. Throughout the booklet, you鈥檒l see some helpful QR codes you can scan using your mobile.听

1. Who works in halls

Hall Team

The friendly team in your hall are here to help you during office hours, 8am-7pm. While you鈥檙e in halls, you鈥檒l get regular emails from your Hall Team and 果冻影院 Accommodation telling you important information. 听

Maintenance Team

When things need to be fixed, the maintenance team will be working in halls. If the repair is in your room, they鈥檒l knock on your door three times before entering. If you鈥檙e out, the maintenance team co-ordinate with the Hall Team to get access while you鈥檙e away so they can fix the issue before you get home. 听

Cleaning Team

Communal areas are cleaned weekly. Please help the cleaning team by keeping shared spaces clean and tidy. This includes emptying any fully rubbish (trash) bins in your flat or corridor into the large bins (dumpsters) at your hall.听

Student Residence Advisers (SRAs)

SRAs are postgraduate students who live with you in halls. They are there to support your wellbeing and help build the hall community. More information on SRAs in section 6!听

Ambassadors

Ambassadors are fellow students who are here at the start of term to help you move in and can answer any questions you might have about life at 果冻影院. They鈥檝e lived in halls before and done at least one year听of study, so they鈥檙e a great resource!听

2. Your room

Inventory

You鈥檒l find the inventory form online on the under the Room Condition section.听Please complete this within 48 hours of moving into your hall. It鈥檚 important to check your inventory thoroughly.听Record anything that seems missing or damaged, otherwise you may be charged for it at the end of the year.听

Decorating your room

There are lots of ways to personalise your room. You can put posters on non-painted surfaces such as pinboards, wardrobes and shelves. Fire hazards like candles, fan heaters, cooking equipment and mains-powered fairy lights are not permitted. A full list can be found in 果冻影院 Accommodation General Regulations.听

Room inspections

Room inspections are a simple check to make sure everything is working properly in your room and takes about five minutes. Once a term, you鈥檒l get an email to let you know when your room inspection will take place.听

Inviting friends

During the daytime you can have guests in your room. Visitors should leave by midnight unless they are an overnight guest.听

You can have one guest in your room overnight at a time, staying a maximum of seven nights in a calendar month.听

For everyone鈥檚 safety and security, please email your Hall Team in advance with names and dates of visitors. All visitors need to bring picture ID, and for fire safety, all guests must sign in when they arrive.听

Window restrictions听

Your window may be fitted with a restrictor that limits how far it opens. It鈥檚 there for your safety and it is important that it is not damaged or removed by you or anyone else. If the restrictor becomes damaged, please tell your Hall Team straight away so it can be fixed.听

3. Personal admin

Your 果冻影院 email account

Your 果冻影院 user ID and password was set up as part of pre-enrolment. All information from your department and central 果冻影院 teams is sent to your 果冻影院 email account. If you have any access issues, contact the Information Services Department on +44 (0)20 7679 5000,听or听log into the听.

Student bank account

Do you have a UK bank account? If not, it鈥檚 a good idea to open one. This will help you manage your money more easily and safely. We strongly advise against carrying large amounts of cash or keeping money in your room. To open a UK bank account, you鈥檒l need a letter from 果冻影院 confirming your student status. This is called a Statement of Student Status. You can download it directly from听听after you are enrolled.听

Register with a doctor

Don鈥檛 wait until you feel unwell. It鈥檚 vital you can access the right health care when you need it. Sign up with a doctor or听General Practitioner (also called a GP). We recommend you register with your local GP which can be found using the .听

National Insurance number

Are you a non-UK student? To work in the UK you鈥檒l need a National Insurance (NI) number . If you鈥檙e a non-UK student on a student visa, there are restrictions on how many hours you can work. Make sure you stick to the terms of your visa.听

UK nationals should have received their NI number at age 16.听

SIM card

For non-UK students, it鈥檚 a good idea to put a local SIM card in your phone. This will make local and international calls cheaper.听

4. Your Hall

Paying your fees

Your rent is paid via Portico once a term. We send an invoice email with details on how to pay. If you鈥檙e facing financial hardship and can鈥檛 pay the full term鈥檚 rent in advance, you may be able to pay in up to three instalments. Log an enquiry via ask果冻影院 under the Request for Hall Fees Instalment Plan category and complete the form.听

Reporting a fault

Maintenance is handled on a scheduled basis. Let us know of any issues as soon as you can. Simply log into the and choose 鈥楻eport a problem鈥� from the top menu to submit a ticket.

Your Hall Team log all maintenance issues and will inform you of planned works.听

Emergency repairs

If you find a serious fault, please contact your Hall Team immediately via email/ phone or in person at the front desk.听

Noise levels

You will need peace and quiet to study, and so will your neighbours. Please be mindful of sound levels.

You may think you鈥檙e not making much noise, but if someone is trying to concentrate or sleep, sound can be very annoying.听

  • Weekdays: please keep noise levels at a minimum between 11pm and 8am.听
  • Weekends: please keep noise levels low between midnight and 8am.听
  • Central Assessment Period: be extra quiet to aid revision. No parties are allowed in halls.听

Washing your clothes

Use the 听on your smartphone to use/pay for the on-site laundry facilities.听You鈥檒l need a bag or basket to carry your washing and detergent.听

Set a timer for when your washing is due to finish so you can collect it. This allows another student to use the machine.听

Kitchen

In a shared kitchen, the appliances may work differently from those at home. Ask the SRAs, Ambassadors or Hall Team to show you how they work or ask for an instruction manual. In a catered hall, you will have areas to prepare food outside of service hours.听

Waste and recycling

果冻影院 is committed to reducing waste and recycling as much as possible. Find out how to recycle in your hall.听

Sustainability

果冻影院 works with students and staff to embed sustainability throughout our campus and culture. Find out how you can get involved to swap clothes, make friends and save money.听

Drinking water

Tap water in the UK is of high quality and purity. It is safe to drink water from any tap in your hall, unless labelled otherwise.听

Locked out?

If you are locked out of your room during the day, speak to the Hall Team at the main reception.

If you get locked out at night, use the to contact 果冻影院 Security. You can also ring the Security Team on +44 (0)20 7679 2222.

If you鈥檝e lost your phone or it鈥檚 out of battery, you can always get 24-hour support from the security lodge at the main entrance on Gower Street.听

5. Fire safety

The safety of our students and staff is a top priority. We appreciate your support in ensuring that 果冻影院 halls are a safe and secure environment to live in.听

The following items are prohibited in 果冻影院 Accommodation:听

  • Portable heat equipment听
  • Firearms (including legally held and imitation firearms), or other weapons or dangerous substances such as explosives
  • Knives (other than those used for food preparation)
  • Mood lighting such as fairy lights (other than those which are battery operated)
  • Humidifiers
  • Plug-in air fresheners
  • Items which have a potential for a naked flame such as candles, incense sticks, fragrance burners, joss sticks, aromatherapy burners, hookah and shisha pipes, oil lamps, fireworks and barbecue equipment
  • Illegal substances, including legal highs听
  • Vape pens, hookah pipes, 鈥榖ongs鈥� or similar paraphernalia producing smoke or vapour
  • Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs) including e-Scooters, e-Bikes, e-Unicycles or similar items
  • 3D printers.听

All residents need to attend a mandatory fire walk in their first week and complete the Fire Safety Site Familiarisation Form on the . Additional information about Fire Safety is available on our website.听

6. Wellbeing & Community

Wellbeing support

Being a student can be difficult and stressful. If you need support or guidance, you鈥檙e not alone. Whatever your reason, there are people at 果冻影院 who can help: Student Residence Advisers (SRAs); your tutors; your departmental Student Adviser, and the 果冻影院 Student Support and Wellbeing Services (SSWS).听

  • Contact SSWS via ask果冻影院 or by visiting the first floor of the Student Centre.听
  • Your GP (doctor) can also help with a wide range of health, personal, social and emotional issues.听

Your SRA Team

SRAs are postgraduate students who live with you in halls and are there to support your wellbeing and help build the hall community. They offer peer-to-peer guidance and can signpost you to 果冻影院 support services. SRAs are on duty between 6pm to 8am on weekdays, and 24 hours on weekends.听

SRAs also run Flourish activities where you can meet new people and make friends! Visit the Flourish calendar to find out what鈥檚 coming up in your hall and when the next inter-hall event will be!听Got an idea for a Flourish activity? Speak to an SRA!听

7. Travel in London

Find your way around

We encourage you to explore the Bloomsbury and 果冻影院 East campuses! As a student, you also have access to study spaces such as the Senate House Library, the British Library, and more.听

There鈥檚 so much to do in London.听Check out the list of recommendations from previous residents of your hall in your room and start discovering your local area.听

Tips for Public听Transport in London

Get a or . These give you money off standard fares on the Tube and buses with Transport for London (TfL). You can also use a contactless credit card or bank card on public transport. Remember to always touch in and out with the same card.听

9. Your Safety

General Regulations

When you finish reading this booklet, read through the General Regulations for living in 果冻影院 Accommodation!听These cover all the rules and important information for students living in 果冻影院 Accommodation.听

Fire alarms

Fire alarms are tested once a week. If the alarm lasts more than a minute, or happens outside of the weekly test time, leave the building immediately.听

If you have an emergency, call 999 for the Police, Ambulance Service or Fire Brigade. This is a free service. You should also inform the Hall Team or SRA team about any emergency, as soon as you can.听

Stay safe

London is a big, and generally safe city, but be wary of strangers. You should keep your door locked and secure at all times.听

Always have your card ready in your hand when you approach a security door and ensure the door is closed behind you. Be mindful that you don鈥檛 unintentionally allow someone without access to enter the building, this is called tailgating.

If somebody has followed you through and it doesn鈥檛 feel right or if you find a suspicious stranger in your hall or flat, report it to 果冻影院 Security, your Hall Team or an SRA right away.

Moped and bike enabled crime occurs in all areas of London. Be aware of your surroundings outdoors and try to avoid using your phone in public.
