3D modelling for the construction industry

A computer scientist supported by 果冻影院 Innovation and Enterprise developed 3D modelling technology to render the entire Olympic stadium on a web browser.

Prior to the involvement of 果冻影院 computer scientist Jozef Dobo拧, the 3D model of the project to turn the Olympic Stadium into a new home for West Ham United Football Club was so complex that only one person on site had a sufficiently powerful computer to render it in its entirety.

Jozef鈥檚 open source version control system for 3D modelling, 3D Repo, was able to render the whole stadium on a web browser, even on low-end devices such as mobiles and tablets, making the information instantly available to everyone on site.

Jozef was on a placement with infrastructure group Balfour Beatty, through an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council Impact Acceleration Account funded programme, BITE (Breakthrough Information Technology Exchange), offered by 果冻影院 Innovation and Enterprise.

3D Repo is a spin-out company based on his doctoral research at the 果冻影院 Centre for Virtual Environments, Imaging and Visualisation.听The company has received advice and support from 果冻影院 Innovation and Enterprise as well as 果冻影院 Business. 听

During his secondment, Jozef also identified another avenue of research that can benefit the construction industry: the adaptation of his open source system into an online platform for managing tendering proposals.

The new project will potentially lead to significant cost savings within the building industry, in line with the government鈥檚 mandate of lowering the cost of public sector construction by 20%.
