Action Learning Course for Early Researchers
Course Description:

This course enables early career research staff to attend a regular Action Learning Set at which they will focus on managing their research in the context of an existing professional life..

The 6 sessions run from 10am to 12:30pm, on the following days:

1) Thurs. 7th Nov. 2024

2) Thurs. 5th Dec. 2024

3) Thurs. 9th Jan. 2025

4) Thurs. 6th Feb. 2025

5) Thurs. 13th Mar. 2025

6) Thurs. 10th Apr. 2025

The course enables you to:

  • Gain support for your research and work-life balance, outside your department
  • Learn how to run an effective group with an Action Learning approach
  • Make potentially life-long relationships with other researchers and early career academics.

    Following the first session, participants will be expected attend all sessions to enable them to work as a group to learn tools and techniques for Action Learning, problem solving and work-life balance for a productive academic journey.

    The first session will entail a general introduction to the approach, providing a practical example of Action Leaning to enable participants to gauge whether the full course of sets is for them before committing to attending the remaining sessions.

    The full course will cover:

  • How to participate in an Action Learning Group
  • Using questions for support, rather than advice
  • How to run an effective professional learning group
  • Using the learning in the course for personal and professional development
  • Giving and receiving professional feedback in challenging circumstances
  • Using scripting to improve the outcomes of challenging meetings and conversations
  • Further techniques for problem solving, making changes and taking action


  • Objectives:

    By the end of the session, you will be able to:

  • Participate in and facilitate an Action Learning set
  • Use effective questions to support reflection, change and action
  • Choose from a range of approaches to problem analysis and problem solving
  • Increase your ability to make choices and manage challenges in the context of your research life
  • Take action on some chosen changes in your work and interactions
  • Decide if you wish to continue working with the group, using the approaches that were offered
  • Intended Audience:

    University research staff, part-time or full time.

    Participants are usually already professionally trained, with research aiming for impact beyond theory, often in the context of health or education.

    Following the first session, participants will be expected attend all sessions to enable them to work as a group to learn tools and techniques for Action Learning, problem solving and work-life balance for a productive academic journey.

    Due to possible conflict in group discussions we are unable to accept any early career researchers who are also a PhD supervisor.
