Description

This module, which is taught in the autumn term, explores modern culture from 1900 to the present day by reading literature and other art forms (ranging from the high-brow to the popular) in the context of a broad range of societal, philosophical, and technological developments.

The following topics may be covered: Modernity and the City; Underworlds; City Symphonies; Underworlds; The Wireless Imagination; Haunting; Filming New York; TV and the City, The Wire; Print Culture; Psychogeography; Blackness and the City.

It is assessed by a 4,000-word essay submitted in the spring term.
