Biography

Described as "of the City of London" when he wrote his will in 1690; owner of Bridges estate in Antigua.
Son of Daniel Tyssen of Zealand and his wife Appollonia Ridley, daughter of Baldwin Ridley. Born 1624. Married Dorothy, daughter of Garrett Collent of St Dunstan East in 1649. Son John baptised 25/05/1651; son Francis born 1653. "The Tyssens were formerly merchants at Flushing, in Holland, but about the reign of James II. they settled in London and became naturalised subjects. Like many other City merchants at that time, they seem to have fixed their abode at Hackney and Shacklewell, and several of them were buried in Hackney Church."

Francis Tyssen the elder of the City of London Esquire.

To my son Francis Tyssen of Shacklewell in Middlesex Esquire my messuages, tenements and hereditaments in the City of London, counties of Middlesex and Huntington and elsewhere in England, subject to a 拢500 annual payment to my loving wife Dorothy Tyssen.

To my son Francis Tyssen all my lands or plantations and stock upon the plantations with the appurtenances in the island of Antigua in America and also all my messuages, lands, tenements and hereditaments in the province of Zealand and elsewhere overseas.

[Various items bequeathed to Francis and Dorothy, including "all household goods, lynnen, plate, gold, silver and jewels which I shall have in my house in Philpott Lane London" to Francis.]

To my wife Dorotny Tyssen 拢1,000 sterling to be paid immediately after my decease.

To the Dutch church in Austin Friars, London, 拢100.

To the poor of the said Dutch church, 拢100.

To the two Ministers of the said church, 拢10 each; to the Rector, 40 shillings; to the Reader, 40 shillings; to the sexton, 20 shillings.

To the poor of the parish of St Andrew Lombard, London, 拢15.

To the Rev. Dr Edward Lake, minister of St Mary Athil, London, 拢5. To Joseph Taylor Clarke of the said Church, 40 shillings.

To the poor of the Great Church in Flushing, Zealand, 拢20.

To Capt. Cornelius Lamb of Flushing, 拢40.

To Daniel Lambe, son of the above Cornelius, 拢50. To Apolina Lambe, daughter of Cornelius, 拢50.

To the children of Cornelius Brandt, late master of a ship at Flushing, deceased, 拢50 to be divided between them.

To John Tyssen of Flushing, 拢100.

To my sister-in-law Mary Vanderpoest, 拢10. To her son Adrian Vanderpoest and his wife, 拢6 each to buy mourning. To her daughter Mary Storksen, 拢6 for mourning.

To Cornelius, Daniel and Apolina Lambe, 拢6 each for mourning. The same to John Tyssen.

To William Garrett, 20 shillings.

Any lands, leases, mortgages, goods, monies, debts, stocks and all my estates whatsoever not hereinbefore bequeathed, to my son Francis Tyssen. He to be sole executor.
