Biography

Henry Palmer of Gelliswick, Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire (and originally of Carew, Pembrokeshire, from which must derive the name of the Carew Castle estate in Jamaica for which he, together with Michael Llewhellin (q.v.), were awarded compensation). 聽

  1. Probably the Henry Palmer whose death was registered at Haverfordwest Q3 1849. Certainly the Henry Palmer of Hubberstone [sic] whose will was proved 25/02/1850. The will is silent on Jamaica property, and provides for his wife Elizabeth, his sons Davis and Thomas Dunn and his four daughters Eliza Rachel, Mary Ann, Caroline Jane and Sarah.

  2. Apparently the tenant rather than owner of Gelliswick Farm.

  3. H. Palmer appears as a Lieutenant in the St Thomas-in-the-Vale Regiment of the Jamaica militia in 1808, but appears to have held no office as magistrate or Assistant Judge around that time. 聽He is shown against Carew Castle from 1811 onwards.

  4. Younger son of William Palmer of Coachyland, Carew, Pembrokeshire, and his wife Elizabeth Thomas (they married in Minwear, 10/08/1773).

  5. Henry Palmer married Elizabeth Dunn at Tenby, 16/01/816. They had seven children. John Dunn Palmer of HM Customs, Kingston, Jamaica: married, 26/10/1836 to Ann Woolery, daughter of William Lord of St. Thomas-in-the-Vale and widow of Henry Roden (died in Jamaica 06/02/1835); he died at his residence, St.Andrew's Pen, near Kingston, August 1838, aged 21 (sic); she died in the following year, aged 23, leaving two infant children (one of whom, Anne Eliza, died at Tiverton in 1851). Thomas Dunn Palmer of Gelliswick, Hubberton, Pembrokeshire (bankrupt in 1852). David Palmer, born 1826. Elizabeth Martha Palmer, born 1826. Mary Ann Palmer, born 1828. Caroline Jane Palmer, died at Brussells, 1869, aged 40. Sarah Maria Palmer, baptised at Hubbertson, 02/05/1827.

  6. His will dated 1840 (with codicil of 1845) was proved in Wales in 1850.

  2. Major Francis Jones, 'The Families of Gelliswick', Archaeologia Cambrensis Vol. CXXIX (1980) p. 146. This describes Henry Palmer as 'a native of Carew, who had prospered as a planter in Jamaica', and places him at Gelliswick at least by Christmas Day 1818 and probably several years earlier. Times 03/04/1869 p. 1 carried a death notice 'at Brussels' for Sarah Maria, widow of Anthony Cox and daughter of the late William [sic] Palmer of Gillyswick [sic] Pembroke and Carew Castle Jamaica. Although a William Palmer was one of the attorneys in Jamaica for Henry Palmer and Michael Llewhillin in the original compensation claim, other sources. e.g. The Ipswich Journal Suffolk, England 10 Oct 1857 show Sarah Maria as daughter of the late Henry Palmer of Gillywick.
