Our Public Engagement journey
The ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Public Engagement Unit was established in 2008. Working with a group of specialists in ancient texts (Hieratic, Demotic, Greek, Coptic & Arabic) an initial scope of the character of the written material in the collection was identified, summarised and technical accounts published to improve database records with non-specialist users in mind. Translators collaborated with the project team to identify examples that have the potential for exhibition and open access publication. Creating clearer paths into searching online are in progress to allow for stimulating research into gender inequality, and sexuality allowing a broader range of use from across the disciplines at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº and external including art and drama and external source communities. The pottery stone fragments of ostraca have now been packaged into plastazote a soft casing material minimising damage to the objects as drawers are opened and closed. For papyri not on display new visible storage units are now in place which provide a safe conservation environment making access to them much easier for staff and researchers alike.  Curating and exhibiting ….New cases for the display of the papyri are also in place offering news ways of linking the papyri texts with objects in the collection demonstrating the importance of the value of ancient texts in evidencing objects and their use. The current exhibition looks at the role of women in Ancient Egypt and links pottery examples to references in papyri. There have been open evenings and days for general public offering a chance to find out about what papyri and ostraca are, what materials are they are made from and what do they tell us. These behind the scenes events offered a glimpse of working practices in a museum and a chance to ask questions to the project team directly.Family activities run during the summer holidays in 2017 focused on offering a chance to make your own shadow puppet and a chance to be creative and imaginative and explore the nature of storytelling in ancient Egypt.Readings of actual papyrus tales in a performance format ran during the 2017 October half term for both families in the afternoon and for adults in the evening. The format brought the stories to life and gave insight into the role of these texts in ancient Egyptian culture. Halloween in October 2017 provided a chance to look at examples of film, television and literature that went influenced by papyrus narrative tales and references to cursing, spells and incantations. During November and December 2017 ‘Curses!’ ran in collaboration with Bompas & Parr, alumni of ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº, who took the idea of cursing and threat found in papyri to produce an innovative and immersive audio tour ending in a cursed experience. This proved very popular and bought a completely new audience to the Petrie. The launch night offered talks and workshops inspired by the context of papyri from making your own curse doll       and delivering a threat! These sessions proved very popular and generated more knowledge and understanding on the difference between cursing and threats in an ancient context. A series of Lost Skills workshops (Nov- Dec 2017) focused on the nature of some of the papyri that offered insights into shopping lists, wills and letters that have similarities with contemporary life. Working with ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº academics from legal, psychology and letter archivists, we ran a series of lunchtime sessions on the art of letter writing and the psychology of list making. Our ‘Women in Egypt’ event (March 2018) tied in with the Suffrage centenary and the Vote 100 celebrations, gave an insight into the role of women in ancient Egypt outside the home as referenced in the papyri. Two performances inspired by the papyrus unveiled a new piece from performance artist Laura Wilson’s residency at the Petrie 2017/18. The project gave Laura a chance to work with conservators, translators to explore and produce a piece based on one specific text relating to stone quarries and workers. Entitled ‘The Stone Draggers, 2018’, the work explores the nature of the papyri, many of which describe labour, crafts people and every day human interaction. University of East London MA drama students have worked with the project team to produce 'Revival: performing papyrus'; a series of devised pieces created by the MA students as a response to The Petrie Museum's new papyrus exhibition. These pieces re-interpret and re-stage narratives found within the collection of papyri, as well as interpreting issues connected to the exhibition such as Margaret Murray's research on British witchcraft, and ancient Egyptian forms of ritual. Passing In (2018)
Performance-led inquiry into legacies of gender equality in higher educationThis study day explored gender equality at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº since the 1860s, featuring a re-enactment performance of prospective students’ admissions experience before 1919. Set against the turbulent backdrop of women’s fight for equality in Britain, we invited reflection on the hidden ‘passing-in’ rules still in place for women and minority groups in higher education.This event was co-conceived and produced by Dr Georgina Brewis, ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Institute of Education and Dr Nina Pearlman, ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Culture. This re-enactment immersed participants in ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº as it was between 1883 and 1919. All intending female students had to present a reference, in person, acceptable to the Lady Superintendent of Women Students. In 1883, birth control activist Annie Besant famously failed this test and was refused admittance. Intersections of gender with class, race and religion will be explored. During the event, participants had the opportunity to present themselves to Miss Morison, using stories taken from historic student records or by creating their own.Discussion panel: Passing in today? An evening panel followed the afternoon of talks and performances and used the historical notion of ‘passing in’ as a means to discuss what might still be hidden passing-in rules in higher education, in terms of gender but also religion, race, LGBTQ+ identity and other intersections of identity, questioning the role played by networks and other diversity initiatives. Miss Morison (Kate Vigurs) opened the evening . It provides context to the historical evolution of the educational system in the UK and critically examines the close, but often hidden, connections between British education and empire, asking what impact these imperial legacies have today. It aims to provide a general introduction to the history of education, while preparing students to take more specialist history modules in year two and three. The course is structured in a broadly chronological fashion but each week also explores a different method or approach to studying, researching and making history.  Students will be introduced to a range of transferable practical skills that are linked to assessment. The initiative began in October 2019 with the commissioning by ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Culture of four Performing Place projects:•    Rhythms of Fractals & Collective Movement•    The Dancing Brain•    You Move Me•    Sound Voice: Voice Loss and IdentityPerforming Place aimed to build relationships between ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº researchers, the people of Camden and external researchers; create opportunities for knowledge exchange between artists, academics and the people of Camden; and build the skills and experience of artists, researchers, and relevant stakeholder communities by working together.  FundingFunding came from the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) Impact Acceleration Account 2017-2022, which aims to support activities focused on collaboration and knowledge exchange between relevant external partners and the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº research community who have or have previously had EPSRC funding. All projects included at least one researcher who is or has previously worked on EPSRC funded research.  ProjectsOver the first few months of the project, artists and researchers began to develop working relationships and delivered workshops and knowledge exchange sessions with community groups.Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a two-week programme of Camden-focused performance, discussion and workshopping in May 2020, including the Performing Place commissions, was unable to take place.Instead, the project teams worked to continue developing their projects in new ways. Some workshops took place online, one artist and researcher wrote letters to each other, and others continued their research virtually.The Dancing Brain – Dr Bani Anvari & Suba SubramaniamThe Dancing BrainThe Dancing Brain combined hand gestures and rhythm with mind-controlled virtual robots to enable improved social interaction and coordination among young students and people with complex learning difficulties. By transposing/translating /transcribing a message from the mind of one participant to the peers through movement, The Dancing Brain aimed to encourage young students that STEM is fun, and empower people with dementia to create a conversation and dialogue with their peers. Camden-based mathematicians and musicians explored the connections between waves and rhythms and contributed their own musical ideas and perspectives.Visit the project page You Move Me â€“ Dr Ellie Cosgrave & Laura WilsonYou Move MeThis cross-discipline collaboration builds on Dr Cosgrave’s existing urban research on the interrelationship between gender and urban infrastructure; and Laura Wilson’s research around civic histories and labour, how information is passed on from one person to another through movement and recent performances investigating how the body learns, adapts, responds and performs. Cosgrave and Wilson worked together with Camden residents to explore their personal relationship with mobility in the city and how this also relates to their personal histories.Visit the project page Sound Voice: Voice Loss and Identity – Professor Martin Birchall, Dr Thomas Moors, Shout at Cancer & Hannah ConwaySound Voice: Voice Loss and Identity Sound Voice: Voice Loss and Identity is a cross disciplinary collaboration spanning healthcare, opera, (a composer and team of professional artists), music therapy, ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº speech therapy and ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº music research via the medium of artistic residencies involving music composition, creative writing and vocal performance and experimentation. This rich blend of the arts and science, building on the experiences and narratives of both those who have experienced loss of laryngeal function and the healthcare professionals who dedicate their careers to finding answers, explored what it means to lose and regain voice and why singing is a human right.Visit the project page

Performing Planet Activism is a strand of intimate ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº performances, workshops and interactions exploring some of the pressing environmental issues of the climate crisis. It explores how eugenics has marginalised voices and shaped society.Eugenic thinking is present in the racism, ableism, homophobia and reproductive controls we see today. This programme will take a critical look at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôºâ€™s history of eugenics and its ongoing impact through the structural inequities eugenic thinking left as a legacy.As a part of this programme, we are running a series of co-created projects working with communities and marginalised groups, a new Fellowship engaging with our collections and building on current work, and collating content and resources responding to ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's legacies of eugenics.Visit our project website to find out more: ucl.ac.uk/prejudice-in-power
